Stress versus strain controlled shear: Yielding and relaxation of concentrated colloidal suspensions

چکیده

In rheological experiments, the relationship between stress and strain is determined. transient regime, this may depend on which of these properties applied measured. general, data collected using one or other as control parameter are not necessarily equivalent. Moreover, assumed steady state relaxation following might whether has been applied. We examined colloidal suspensions with concentrations around glass transition compared their response to strain, in particular, after start-up shear, state, cessation shear. After behavior was found significantly sample exposed a constant shear rate stress. Nevertheless, transients lead that independent how it reached, long yielding occurred corresponding under shows both similarities differences. This quantified based on, e.g., hydrodynamic, Brownian, residual well recovered strain. addition, responses rheometers abrupt changes have characterized. The technical presented taken into account interpretation.

Analysis of the Yielding Behavior of Electrorheological Suspensions by Controlled Shear Stress Experiments

Volume 16 · Issue 1 © Appl. Rheol. 16 (2006) 14– 18 Abstract: The yielding behavior of two model electrorheological suspensions of uncoated silica particles and silica coated with polyaniline base in silicone oil using controlled shear rate and controlled shear stress experiments has been analyzed. The results demonstrate that unlike the uncertain dynamic yield stress values estimated from the ...

Dielectric response of concentrated colloidal suspensions

The determination of the low-frequency ~typically 0–1 MHz! dielectric dispersion of colloidal suspensions may become an electrokinetic tool of wider use if the accuracy of experimental data can be improved and if trustable theories, available for a wide range of situations, are made available. In the present work, we focus on the latter aspect: Since the dielectric constant of the suspensions i...

Yielding and flow of highly concentrated, few-layer graphene suspensions.

For a wide range of applications of graphene suspensions, a thorough understanding of their rheological properties is crucial. We probe the microstructure of dense suspensions of micron-sized, few-layer, defect-free graphene platelets by measuring their viscoelastic properties at various concentrations up to 39 mg ml(-1). We propose a model to relate the yield strain to the mesh size of the mic...

Viscoelasticity and shear flow of concentrated, noncrystallizing colloidal suspensions: Comparison with mode-coupling theory

We present a comprehensive rheological study of a suspension of thermosensitive particles dispersed in water. The volume fraction of these particles can be adjusted by the temperature of the system in a continuous fashion. Due to the finite polydispersity of the particles (standard deviation: 17%), crystallization is suppressed and no fluid-crystal transition intervenes. Hence, the moduli G′ an...

Theory of nonlinear rheology and yielding of dense colloidal suspensions.

A first-principles approach to the nonlinear flow of dense suspensions is presented which captures shear thinning of colloidal fluids and dynamical yielding of colloidal glasses. The advection of density fluctuations plays a central role, suppressing the caging of particles and speeding up structural relaxation. A mode coupling approach is developed to explore these effects.
